about

After several years as a member of three nationally-acclaimed bands – Horse Feathers, Jared Mees, Sean Flinn – musician Sam Cooper has gone rogue, channeling his multi-instrumentalism into a truly solo album titled, “Long Lost Love”. Like a prism breaking a beam of white light into its multitudinous parts, his poetic, metaphorically-dense songs unwind on the album with complex layers of self-harmony backed by himself on a dozen multi-tracked instruments. His mastery takes the phrase “multi-instrumentalist” to impressive excess: guitar, piano, violin, accordion, flute, banjo, bass, glockenspiel, mandolin and even the charango (a kind of Andean lute). Oh, and he sings, too.

But in his live shows, it’s a different approach. Away from the technological alchemy, the focus is narrowed instead to the most personal level – connecting and communing with an audience through flannel-clad humor, musical challenges, singalongs and of course, stellar musicianship. It’s a night of pure entertainment, a northwest-style “Vegan Cabaret,” where Sam Cooper, the consummate entertainer, engages and delights the audience with a natural kind of charisma and charm.

Cooper draws from multiple musical genres to create a sound at once comfortingly familiar and totally unreplicated. His music is early American rock ‘n’ roll mixed with Americana, modern folk, a tinge of pop and a hint of bluegrass, but it’s confined to none of those genres. ... more
